The Department of Modern Indian Languages, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh recently celebrated the Marathi Language Day in memory of Vishnu Vāman Shirwādkar in the Department of Modern Indian Languages conference Hall.
Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar was an eminent Marathi poet, playwright, novelist, short story writer, apart from being a humanist, who wrote on freedom, justice and emancipation of the deprived, in a career spanning five decades starting in pre-independence era, he wrote 16 volumes of poems, three novels, eight volumes of short stories, seven volumes of essays, 18 plays and six one-act plays.

Professor A. Nujum, chairperson, Department of Modern Indian Languages, AMU focused on the importance of language. Dr. Amina Khatoon, Assistant Professor, recited a poem in Marathi language on the theme of the condition of Dalit community.
While presiding over the program, Dr. Taher H Pathan informed the audience about the importance of the day. “We are celebrating the Marathi Language Day first time in AMU’s history, and hope to continue it”, said Dr. Taher.
The organizers of the program were Mr. Syed Nur Nobi, Ms. Waheda Rahman, Mr. Shamim Ahmed, Mr. Mohammad Soleman Pharcy and Mr. Nazrul Islam and more.
The program was conducted by Basaheb Jadhav, a research scholar of Marathi Language.
