Throughout the globe the United Nations Day is celebrated on 24th of October but due to festive season the United Nation Chapter of Aligarh Muslim University decided to observe it on 5th of November this year.

The United Nation’s chapter was established in the Aligarh Muslim University for first time on 1st September 2016. There are 110 registered members in UN-AMU Chapter as of date. UN-AMU chapter aims to shape future leaders who are well versed in international development and democratic systems.

The UN Chapter of Aligarh Muslim University, observed the 71st UN Day on 5th of November in the Department of Commerce. Lt. Gen (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah, Vice-Chancellor, inaugurated the event and hoisted the UN flag. Prof. Nawab Ali Khan, Dean Faculty of Commerce, Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan, Chief Mentor UN Chapter and Dr. Asiya Chaudhary, Chief Coordinator of UN Chapter AMU were present on the occasion.

The event commenced with a brief introduction about the the UN chapter by Commerce Honors 3rd year student Anas Raheem. Mr. Anas Raheem is the main architect of UN Chapter in AMU. The Dean presented a welcome note .The Vice-Chancellor motivated the students to aspire for bigger goals in life. He emphasized on the importance of commerce in today’s world and he put forth his point of view as to how it is essential to change with the changing times but for a better cause.

Emphasizing the better use of technology on the part of students, Lt. Gen. (Retd.)  Zameer Uddin Shah said “Sell your bikes and buy laptops because it is the [better and dedicated use of] technology that will take you ahead.” 

Prof. Mohd Mohsin Khan and Dr Asiya Chaudhary emphasized the role of youth in sustainable development which is a major goal of the United Nations.

In the celebration of UN Day, article writing, power point presentation and debate competition were organized. The themes dealt with sustainable development of the world and how can they be implemented in improvised and can be used for sustaining the current resources and improving the social haphazard situations.

All competitions were held in the conference hall of Department of Commerce AMU. The participants had to write the article on the spot, while its topic was ‘Role of youth in building a more sustainable future’. The topic of the debate was ‘this house believes that UN has been at the forefront for promotion of international laws and human rights’ and the participants had to speak with a time limit of 3+1 minute.

The last competition was Power Point presentation for which the topic was ‘Plan of action for achieving sustainable development goals in relation to India.’ The time limit for presenting the presentation being 5+2 minute.

The students participated with zeal, a total of 60 students participated in these events, excluding the UN Chapter members. Finally, the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Asiya Chaudhary which bought the event to an end.
